Beta Symbol

The beta symbol is the second letter of the greek alphabet. Beta derived from the Phoenician letter "beth," has been in use for over 2,700 years. It's the ancestor of our Latin "B." The uppercase Beta looks identical to our "B," while the lowercase form (β) has a distinct curvy shape. In ancient Greece, beta was associated with the number two and often represented duality or second place.

Beta Meaning

Beta is frequently used to represent the second in a series or a secondary version of something. In finance, it's a key measure of a stock's volatility relative to the overall market. In software development, "beta testing" refers to the phase of testing before a product's official release. The term "beta male" has also entered popular culture as a counterpart to "alpha male."
