Epsilon Symbol

The epsilon symbol is the fifth letter of the greek alphabet. Epsilon comes from the Phoenician letter "he." It's one of the most frequently used letters in the Greek language. The uppercase form looks identical to our Latin "E," while the lowercase form resembles a reversed "3." In ancient Greek numerical systems, epsilon represented the number five.

Epsilon Meaning

In mathematics, epsilon often represents a very small quantity, particularly in calculus when discussing limits. In physics, it's used to denote permittivity, a measure of a material's ability to store an electric field. In computer science, epsilon is used in formal language theory to represent an empty string. The phrase "within epsilon" has entered common usage to mean "very close to" or "almost."
